Verizon knows best when it comes to tethering… but is it their right?

Because Verizon has the right to be the gatekeeper for a piece of hardware that you’ve purchased, you now cannot tether through means other than using Verizon’s approved route.

I don’t believe that any company has the right to dictate what you do with a device after you’ve purchased it, unless you’ve provided express consent.  I doubt that any of these folks have.
